Inspiration from The Grid

I earned some major girlfriend points last night by seeing Tron Legacy in 3D with GDG.  I have never seen a 3D movie and was really impressed!  I missed the first Tron movie and have never been a big computer game kind of girl, so the storyline wasn't super appealing to me.  But I really appreciated the movie for it's set design.  The story takes place within a computer system and everything is highly digital and futuristic.  But even as the set designers were going for futuristic they used classic furniture lines with modern textiles and mixed traditional and modern design extremely well.

The above is a widescreen shot of the home of Jeff Bridge's character Kevin Flynn.  Notice the the white fireplace agains the black, almost as if build into the side of a cliff?

Above is Miss Olivia Wilde looking banging in her spandex-neon get up. Notice the lines of the loveseat, but with black leather?  Love it!

Closer shot of the phenomenal chandelier.

Yes, that's a roasted pig in the middle of the table.  And I definitely did not see any live pigs running around The Grid, so I'm not sure where they caught this little piggy ... but I digress ... assuming the dining table and chairs are lucite?  Love that everything looks icy and cold.

And before I go on to how to use this inspiration in the real world, a shout out to Michael Sheen who was awesomely creepy and eccentric with his white hair and blue eye shadow.

Ok, so how would I put this inspiration into action?

GORGEOUS black slate counter tops balanced by the white subway tile.

Paint an entire wall black and layer black on black like they've done here with the black antlers.

Gorgeous black painted floors -- looks like spilled ink, love it!

And check out this awesome lucite bench with what looks like light gray leather.  Two modern materials but classic tufting.

An overall theme of the interior design of Tron was high contrast and also an element of icy seperation.  Obviously you never want a feel of "icy seperation" in your home, but I could definitely run with the idea of high contrast.  And that's exactly what Miss Erin Gates did in her post on Elements of Style (she's phenom.)

Cheers to whatever high contrast is in your life and your home!
